Meet the founders – Wematics

1- Can you briefly explain what your solution is all about? What’s unique about it?

Wematics develops hardware and software solutions to turn in-situ cameras into weather sensors, powered by fog computing and computer vision. Our technology complements satellite observations to provide street-level weather information.

2- What’s the story behind your company? How was the idea for this business born?

It all started in 2020 with the challenge of short-term solar power forecasting. It turned out that the only capable technology providing reasonable solar irradiance nowcasting results were in situ sky cameras. Thus, we decided to deep dive into the development of these devices.

3-Which is the challenge that your solution tackles, and how do you set apart from the other companies with similar solutions?

Weather-sensitive industries require highly localized weather data, including drones, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy. We exploit the usage of cameras to retrieve real-time hyperlocal weather information to provide high-resolution weather maps.

4- What are your goals, and what’s the biggest challenge you are trying to overcome at this moment?

The goal is to deploy the largest network of in situ sky observations to contribute to the new generation of weather models. The biggest challenge right now is scaling up the solution from the proof of concept and prototyping into production and industrialization.

5- What advice would you give to an entrepreneur trying to pave his/her way in the space sector landscape?

There is a lot of open-source data that can be used to develop demos and provide value to end users. Go niche.

6- About SUN, why did you apply?

Because of the large network of mentors and startups involved. I’m curious to know more about their activities and potentially collaborate.
